Canfield leads Beavers into the Un-Civil War

It’s hard to believe that in the over 100-year history of the Oregon and Oregon State rivalry, never before have they met with a winner takes all Rose Bowl bid on the line. Sure, they have met when either team had a chance to win and get to Pasadena but never in a de facto Pac-10 Championship game.

A couple of things you can expect in tonight’s game on ESPN at 9 PM ET, points and more points.

sean-canfield2Oregon State
Over the last five games the Beavers, led by hottie quarterback Sean Canfield and running backs James and Jacquiz Rodgers, are averaging close to 40 points per game.

Canfield, a senior this year, threw 19 interceptions as a sophomore but has completed just over 70% of his passes in 2009 for nearly 2800 yards and with a 3 to 1 TD/INT ratio he’s moving up on NFL draft boards. With all of the pre season hype surrounding Matt Barkley, Jeremiah Masoli and Jake Locker its Canfield, with a passer rating of 147.47, who sits a top the PAC-10 in passing efficiency.

Teammates and brothers James and Jacquizz Rodgers of Richmond, TX not only lead the team in rushing but also in receptions.

Oregon
Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has been inconsistent in 2009 but has come up big in big games against Cal, USC, Stanford and Arizona. Playing a nationally televised night game at home against your hated in-state rivals to send your school to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1994 is about as big as it gets at the collegiate level.

Running back LaMichael James, who replaced semi-pro boxer LaGarette Blount after his non-sanctioned bout at Boise State earlier this year, is avergaing 6.9 yards per carry and is second only to Toby Gerhart in the PAC-10 in rushing.

Prediction and more photos of Canfield
Oregon 150 – Oregon State 149, oh wait, this isn’t basketball….or is it?

NFL Power Rankings – Week 12

NFL Power Rankings – Week 12

Week 12 of the 2009 NFL season will be remembered mostly for Monday Nights Saint’s beat down of the New England Patriots, the Steelers losing another divisional game and the NY Giants lackluster play in Denver.

So how do I rank them from #1 to #32 or in gay terms from top to bottom?

drew brees1. New Orleans – the Saints take over the top spot from the Colts based on their total domination of the Patriots.

2. Indianapolis – last week I considered New Orleans and Indy as close as 1 and 1a but the Colts are simply not as dominant in victory as the Saints are right now.

3. Minnesota

4. San Diego – a convincing win over the Chiefs was expected and delivered.

5. New England – dropped 2 out of 3, granted both games were on the road against the NFL’s two undefeated teams but the Patriots look ‘un-Patriot-like’ in New Orleans.

matt-leinart6. Arizona – losing on the road in the last seconds to a hungry Titans team is not that bad especially with Kurt Warner sitting out. Although Matt Leinart looks better, he doesn’t give the Cardinals the best chance to win.

7. Green Bay

8. Cincinnati

9. Dallas – geared up for a tough five-game stretch with a ho hum victory over the Raiders.

10. Philadelphia

11. Denver – the big movers this week up from last week’s #16 ranking. The Broncos bounce back with Kyle Orton’s return and out everything’d the Giants.

12. Baltimore – beat the Steelers in OT at home but their defense doesn’t scare anyone anymore.

13. Pittsburgh

vince-young14. Tennessee Titans – Vince Young and Chris Johnson are carrying the Titans.

15. Jacksonville Jaguars

16. Atlanta – good win with a backup QB but the Falcons playoff hopes are fading.

17. Houston – lost a 17-point lead against the Colts. With remaining games at Jacksonville, Miami and ending the season at home against New England means the Texans are done.

18. San Francisco 49′ers

19. Miami – playoff contenders don’t lose to the Bills.

eli-manning20. New York Giants – I’ve never seen a team with this much talent play dead.

21. New York Jets – wasn’t it Pete Carroll who said Mark Sanchez needed another year of college?

22. Chicago

23. Carolina

24. Seattle

25. Buffalo

26. Washington

27. Kansas City

28. Oakland

29. Detroit

30. Tampa Bay

31. Cleveland

32. St Louis – losing at home to the Seahawks is about as bad as it gets.

Tiger’s Right to Request Privacy

tiger-woodsDenial followed by admittance never works out well. I know I have, and I bet a majority of people reading this post have lied when first approached about their own shortcomings. It’s not right but it is human nature, the majority of humans do not act or behave rationally when confronted with their own sins.

Let’s face it, Tiger lied on Sunday when he said,

“Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.”

He’s now coming clean in his own way by stating on his web site,

“I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”

Anyone who has ever been through something like this understands the emotional roller coaster ride Tiger and his wife, Elin, are on. If Tiger and Elin do not want to go public with the details of this affair then we should all leave them alone.

I’m not saying that other parties involved do not have the right to publicly disclose the truth about what transpired but now that Tiger has somewhat admitted his ‘transgressions’ it’s time to back off his family and let them begin the healing process.

Yes, Tiger lied at first and even though the media may have forced him to come clean both publicly and privately, Woods is working privately to repair his relationship, which, as far as is his family is concerned, would be his biggest win ever.

Finally Woods offered an apology to his supporters on his website,

“I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.”

Tiger Woods has been a decent enough guy for years and certainly deserves a second chance. Our own need to know should be laid aside to save Elin and his kids any further pain.

Brees-y in the Big Easy

tom-bradyWith pinpiont precision Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints took apart a young New England Patriots defense on Monday night for a 38-17 victory at the Superdome. Monday night’s game was definitely a statement game and the Saints declared ‘Dats Who’ on offensive, defensive and special teams.

Brees’ five TD passes were the most ever against a Belichick coached team and Tom Brady and the Patriots looked as confused as they did earlier in the year when Brady was returning from a knee injury.

The Patriots at 7-4 have a 2-game lead over the Dolphins and Jets in the AFC East so there’s no need to panic. However, after 11 games in 2009 it’s clear that the Patriots are on the downside of their championship years, the offense has been good at times but the defense hasn’t been able to come up with big stops.
