If good things happen in threes then bad things happen in fours.
Don’t believe me? Just ask Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Dave Bush who tied a Major League Baseball record last night. In the fourth inning, Bush became only the third pitcher in MLB history to give up four home runs to four straight hitters: Adam LaRoche, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Steven Drew.
Bush’s dubious distinction leaves him tied with former Tigers’ pitcher Paul Foytack, and, oddly enough, another active Brewer pitcher, minor leaguer Chase Wright.
Wright who was a Yankee allowed four straight against Boston in only his second major league start before being traded to Milwaukee. For his career, Wright is 2-0 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 innings pitched in 2007. His second start, the one in which he allowed four straight jacks, was his last major league appearance.
Foytack, who had a nice seven year run as a starter for the Tigers from ’56 to ’63 only pitched in a handful of games after giving up four straight in a game against the Indians in 1963. For his career Foytack was 86-87 with a 4.14 ERA.
For Bush, who finished eighth in the 2004 Rookie of the Year Voting while with the Blue Jays, it might be time to think about polishing up the résumè. In the last two seasons, Bush is 10-19 with an ERA over 5.
And now you know the rest of the story……
