So much for those handshakes before the games leading to better behavior on the field. It only took 4 quarters for some fucktard to ruin it for everyone. More on that in a bit. The real story from Thursday night is the dominating performance of the Boise St. Broncos.
Some say that ESPN had been over hyping the Boise State / Oregon game in an effort to boost ratings but consider this, before Thursday night the Broncos had never played a ranked team at home. NEVER! To say that this was the biggest game in Boise State history might not be an understatement because it sets them up to possibly get into the Top 10 this week. For years the Broncos and TCUs of the world have known that even going undefeated might not get them a shot at the BCS title game. Even while Florida and LSU got bids with one or two losses the Broncos got snubbed. With a big win vaulting them into the Top 10 this early If they stay undefeated they almost assure themselves of very serious consideration at the end.
It’s not as if they squeaked by Oregon, they dominated the Ducks. Seriously, Oregon got slapped down hard. Oregon had talked a lot about revenge after Boise embarrassed the Ducks in Eugene last year. Who’s embarrassed now? Oregon again. If this in any indication of the strength of the PAC 10, look for Matt Barkely to have plenty of time to develop and for USC to roll the West.
An emphasis placed on developing the running game during the off season led to a more balanced attack for the Broncos on Thursday. Boise State gained 164 yards on the ground and QB Kellen Moore was 19-29 for 197 through the air. Boise’s under rated defense held the Ducks to 152 yards total offense.
After the game two bad things happened. First Boise State linebacker Byron Hout slapped Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount on the shoulder pad and obviously taunted him. What happened next was totally unexpected as Blount waited until Hout had turned to the side before landing a right jab that put Hout to the turf.
You can watch it unfold here.
Who’s more wrong? There’s no such thing. They were both wrong for doing what they did. Hout got his punishment from Blount. Blount will surely get his in the next few days. Oregon Coach Chip Kelly has a lot on his plate this week. First he’s got to build up his team’s confidence and then decide if LeGarrette Blount deserves to be a Duck any longer.
What do you think LeGarrette Blount’s punishment should be?
A butt load of college quarterback news from the past couple of days as coaches begin to select their starters for the season openers. This is the time of year freshman begin to falter under the unrealistic expectations of recruiting analysts and come crashing back down to earth. They’ve been on campus for weeks, or possibly since the Spring, and are coming to the realization they’re not as good as everyone said they were. While other incoming freshman realize they belong on this stage but it might be some time before they’re able to contribute in any meaningful way. The glory days of high school are fading away.
Jacory Harris in @ Miami, recruits 2 transfer
Miami QBs Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith asking for their release on Tuesday from The U is a case of young men realizing they were going to back up Jacory Harris for the next three years. Kudos for their new-found self awareness but where was it on national signing day?
The situation at Miami highlights what I see as a major problem with ranking recruiting classes. It fails to address how recruiting fills a team’s needs. How is that a school signing three highly rated QBs, knowing eventually one or two will transfer, is ranked higher than a school that addresses it needs?
It’s back on @ USC, bring it
The much covered QB battle at USC just got a whole lot more interesting on Tuesday as Aaron Corp returned from his broken left fibula. Coach Carroll was surprised at Corps’ play on Tuesday and now it appears that Corp and #25 hottie Matt Barkley will battle over the next week before Carroll makes a decision.
Justin Burke named starter @ the ‘Ville
NC State transfer Justin Burke returns to his ol’ Kentucky home and Coach Jim Kragthorpe says he will start the opener against Indiana State. Junior college transfer Adam Froman is suffering from a muscle pull in his upper back, ouch!
Chris Todd @ Auburn
Chris Todd beats out 2008 starter Kodi Burns at Auburn. Burns has worked his way into the suddenly loaded WR group on the Plains. This will work out much better for Burns and Auburn.
Johnson beats out Tannehill @ A&M
At Texas A&M, Coach Mike Sherman has decided that Ryan Tannehill needs more work and thus Jr. Jerrod Johnson will get the start for the season opener versus Nex Mexico. Johnson led the team with over 2500 yards passing last year but the Aggies finished a disappointing 4-8. The losses in 2008 are attributable to a defense that gave up 40+ in eight ball games, not Johnson. However, according to Sherman,
I believe in both our quarterbacks and am equally happy with both, but the nod will go to Jerrod as our starter for the first ballgame, and we’ll go from there,” head coach Mike Sherman said.
From this quote it appears that Johnson has won this battle but not the war.
