Tiger Woods AP Named Athlete of the Decade

December 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Tiger Woods received 56 of the 142 votes cast by AP member editors to be named Associated Press Athlete of the Decade. It’s worth noting that over 50% of the ballots were returned after the Thanksgiving Weekend controversy erupted.

AP Athlete of the Decade Results
1. Tiger Woods – 64 wins and 12 majors
2. Lance Armstrong – 6 Tour de France titles
3. Roger Federer – more Grand Slam titles than anyone ever
4. Michael Phelps – Olympic gold medal record holder
5. Tom Brady
6. Usian Bolt

Even before Tiger Wood’s sex scandal became public knowledge I would’ve voted for Lance Armstrong, overcoming cancer to do what he did is an inspiration to us all. What do you think? Did the AP get it right? Or, if you were AP would you drop his ass like Accenture did?

Tiger’s Right to Request Privacy

tiger-woodsDenial followed by admittance never works out well. I know I have, and I bet a majority of people reading this post have lied when first approached about their own shortcomings. It’s not right but it is human nature, the majority of humans do not act or behave rationally when confronted with their own sins.

Let’s face it, Tiger lied on Sunday when he said,

“Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.”

He’s now coming clean in his own way by stating on his web site,

“I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”

Anyone who has ever been through something like this understands the emotional roller coaster ride Tiger and his wife, Elin, are on. If Tiger and Elin do not want to go public with the details of this affair then we should all leave them alone.

I’m not saying that other parties involved do not have the right to publicly disclose the truth about what transpired but now that Tiger has somewhat admitted his ‘transgressions’ it’s time to back off his family and let them begin the healing process.

Yes, Tiger lied at first and even though the media may have forced him to come clean both publicly and privately, Woods is working privately to repair his relationship, which, as far as is his family is concerned, would be his biggest win ever.

Finally Woods offered an apology to his supporters on his website,

“I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology.”

Tiger Woods has been a decent enough guy for years and certainly deserves a second chance. Our own need to know should be laid aside to save Elin and his kids any further pain.
